Well, we already have WiMax, so let's say hello to "xMax", a new wireless broadband platform designed to emit signals too weak to be picked up by normal antennas, but can be "heard" by special aerials that know where to "listen", thereby enabling dual usage of the same scarce radio spectrum. According to XG Technology, the inventors of the technology, xMax could spur providers that have no radio spectrum to offer a wireless broadband service with very few base stations and add more stations and increase density as demand rises. In addition, it may benefit otherwise overlooked rural areas since most providers feel their return on investment doesn't justify the cost of building base stations to cover them.
This is an interesting development but it remains to be seen if xMax will catch on, especially with major testing on WiMax being done by Sprint and Motorola and with more hotspots emerging. The demand for xMax might not exist before it even has a chance to get noticed.
